10 Questions with Dirk Erik Schulz
1.... who are your favorite artists?
Leiji Matsumoto, Francisco Ibáñez, Chuck Jones, Milt Kahl, Shūichi Seki and Doug TenNapel.
2.... do you offer workshops for artists?
None so far. But when there is interest?
3.... what helps boost your creativity?
There are a lot sources. Good music is the classic source and I don't care which genre. Matters which mood I wanna have.
4.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?
I use chinese ink and brushes when I work traditional. When I ink digital, I prefer PaintTool SAI. Colors are made with Photoshop, since I cannot afford traditional colors that much.
5.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?
I like to get as surreal as possible with forms and think I can always do better, without going too over the top. Finding the right balance in your mind and work is a satisfying discovery and keeps it rolling.
6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?
Passion is the reason why you started drawing, so following it keeps you sane. Try to do personal work, when you are flooded with commissions who demand you not being yourself.
7.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?
The secret is; Don't ask this stupid question and start working on your skills.
8.... where can people see your work (online, conventions or exhibits)?
I have a deviantart, CGHUB and Tumblr page where I use my nickname 'Themrock'. Or you check my webcomic 'The Swefs' on www.theswefs.com.
9.... was there a certain moment that you knew you wanted to be an artist?
When I watched my first cartoon.
10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?
Keep working and stop procastinating. With work comes wisdom, with wisdom comes skill, with skill comes quality.
