10 Questions with Gris Grimly!
1.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?
I mostly use watercolor and ink. But sometimes I use body parts.
2.... can you describe your creative process when making art?
I come up with an idea in my head, I'll sketch it out and then proceed to finals. I don't do too much dicking around.
3.... what helps boost your creativity?
Everything. Long road trips. Other artists. Halloween. Movies. Literature. Life.
4.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?
I need to focus and motivate myself not to work. I look forward to creating artwork. Usually the last thing I'm thinking of before I fall asleep is that I can't wait to wake up and go back to work.
5.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?
I don't know if there is one. If there is, it would make things easier for me.
6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?
You have to be able to balance it. If you are going to continue to succeed, you need to play the game. Sometimes you have to do something you don't agree with to make everyone happy. But if no one is deterring you, go for it.
7.... how and when do you get your best ideas?
Any time and no time. I don't think it comes to me like that. Maybe when I was younger I would get my best ideas at night, but life is different now. I need to be able to produce in the morning and afternoon as well.
8.... who are your favorite artists?
I was most influenced by Sam Keith, Edward Gorey, Egon Schiele, Tim Burton and Jamie Hewlett. But lately I've been finding appreciation in the works of Norman Rockwell, Arthur Rackham and Aubrey Beardsley. Current artists that I look up to are Jon J Muth, Kent Williams and Michael Hussar.
9.... do you offer workshops for artists?
Only myself.
10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?
Draw. Draw. Draw.
