10 Questions with Ken Barthelmey
1.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?
I work mainly with pencil and Photoshop, but I recently started to work with Zbrush as well.
2.... can you describe your creative process when making art?
When designing a creature or character, I always start with very rough scribbles to come up with ideas. After that I proceed with more detailed and clean pencil sketches which I color afterwards in photoshop.
3.... what helps boost your creativity?
This is a tough question. I think having a sketchbook and sketching everyday into it is very important.
4.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?
I always try to do my best to improve my skills.
5.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?
Simply a lot of experience and practice.
6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?
Yes definitely. You can only do the best job when you have and follow your passion.
7.... how and when do you get your best ideas?
Actually while doing sport and while sketching weird stuff.
8.... who are your favorite artists?
There are many: Ralph McQuarrie, Ray Harryhausen, Boris Vallejo, Frank Frazetta, William Stout,...
9.... do you offer workshops for artists?
Unfortunately not.
10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?
Follow your passion and don't listen to what other people say.
