10 Questions with Mike Faille
1.... what medium and tools do you use to create art?
I
mix things up a lot, but for illustration I tend to use equal parts
pencil on paper, Photoshop and Illustrator CS3. A also have an old
Intuos drawing tablet.
2.... can you describe your creative process when making art?
First
a rough pencil in sketch on paper. I'll scan it in and tighten it up in
photoshop. Once the drawing is tight enough, I'll 'ink' it in Adobe
Illustrator using a combination of pen tool and a basic round brush.
Then I'll color it in Photoshop.
3.... what helps boost your creativity?
Usually eating well and
getting some light exercise does it for me. I look at a ton of art and
photography books for inspiration.
4.... what helps you maintain focus and motivation when creating?
Some good music always helps. Anything without lyrics works well when I need to concentrate. Movie soundtracks are my fav.
5.... what is the secret to creating a great piece of art?
Being
hyper-critical of your own work. Never settle if something doesn't feel
perfect. Erase and re-draw that hand 100 times if you have to.
6.... do you feel its important to follow your passion in your career?
Not
entirely. Do what you can to earn a living. If people aren't paying you
to do the art you want to make - make it for yourself.
7.... how and when do you get your best ideas?
I honestly have no idea.
8.... who are your favorite artists?
Paul Bonner,
Greg Manchess,
John Berkey.
9.... do you offer workshops for artists?
Nope.
10.... if you could give other artists one piece of advice what would it be?
Life drawing. Find a class nearby and attend!
